Lets Be Flexible!
Phil's Careers Blog Letâs Be Flexible! By Phil Gérard Summer is formally here and I thought this could be a good time to talk about work-life stability and suppleness as part of complete compensation. Total compensation is the entire bundle. It contains not only wage and advantages but additionally other non-financial incentives such as flexibility. In my early days as a fundraiser there was a bit of a stigma with versatile work preparations corresponding to telecommuting (working remotely, i.e. from residence) or flex days (additionally referred to as nine-day fortnight) the place primarily, employees work extra time daily and revel in a time off every different week. Fundraising is a aggressive environment and asking for versatile work hours or telecommuting would have then been seen as taking a step again, not being as dedicated to acting at a prime-degree. As recruiter, I work with totally different shoppers from various sectors and I am noticing a change. I all the time ask my clients what varieties of advantages an d incentives they provide. I am noticing that lots of my clients are providing flex days today. This is obtainable not solely to supporting workers but additionally to frontline fundraisers. I am also seeing different attention-grabbing packages such as summer hours, the place workplaces close half an hour earlier in the summertime months or fully on Fridays. The key for fulfillment with flexibility is that senior administration embraces it as part of the groupâs culture and presents it to all. They need to set an indication that it's ok to have work-life-stability, after all as long as performance is at a wonderful level. It is also necessary to notice that flexibility must be individualized. Not every little thing works for everyone. Flex days usually are not an incentive for all. Some individuals like normal work hours but choose working daily. Others love working a day a week from home whereas others choose to work in the office. Flexibility performs an necessary part in recru itment as well as retention. Some organizations can simply not be as aggressive in compensation as the large retailers. A flexible work surroundings can help organizations attract prime expertise and keep it. I believe it is going to be increasingly necessary for organizations, particularly those that have been much less open to flexibility as part of total compensation, to evaluation their approaches on this aggressive job market. Your Business Card dont leave home without it - Copeland Coaching
Your Business Card dont leave home without it One of the very first things that I recommend to the job seekers that I meet with is to get business cards- and to take them everywhere. So often, job seekers say they are in one of a few predicaments: Im between jobs, so I dont have business cards. Im in college / graduate school, so I dont need business cards. Im changing careers, so my current business card from work isnt relevant. I have to tell you, none of these excuses are anything more than excuses. At the end of the day, when youre looking for a job, potential employers need to know how to contact you. You never know when or where you might meet someone who may end up being your next boss, or your next great networking contact (who will introduce you to your next big job). If you dont have business cards, its time to get them. And the good news is, its easy. It only takes a few minutes to order them online, and then they arrive to your house a few days later. Before you start, youll want to think about what to include on your business card. At a bare minimum, you need to include: Your name Your phone number I recommend your cell phone, so that you can receive calls anytime Your e-mail address Refer back to my previous post about which e-mail address to use and not use Other elements you can also add: Your personal website URL, if you have one Your personal logo, if you have one A title that describes your desired line of work Think of something along the lines of Project Manager or Digital Marketing Consultant Your address If youre the kind of person that has multiple types of jobs, or qualifications in multiple areas, you may want to consider a card that does not have your title. This will allow you to give the same card to different people, in different industries, and for different types of roles. If youre not a graphic artist, or experienced with PhotoShop, dont try to design a logo on your own. If you have a friend whos an artist, ask them for their help or leave off the logo altogether. A simple business card is much better than a messy one. Your Business Card dont leave home without it I dont want to sound like a broken record, but this is a point that I want to drive home. One of the very first things I recommend to the job seekers I meet with is to get business cards- and to take them everywhere. So often, job seekers say they are in one of a few predicaments: Im between jobs, so I dont have business cards. Im in college (or graduate school), so I dont need business cards. Im changing careers, so my current business card from work isnt relevant. My company doesnt have the money to print them, so I dont have business cards. I have to tell you, none of these excuses are anything more than excuses. At the end of the day, when youre looking for a job, potential employers need to know how to contact you. The Resume Template Trend You Should Avoid
The Resume Template Trend You Should Avoid The Resume Template Trend You Should Avoid There are numerous motivations to utilize a resume format, yet in the event that you go that course, its significant pick a layout cautiously. Its normal for layouts to be stacked with superfluous components and highlights, for example, photographs and illustrations. What's more, today were discussing one specific resume format highlight you ought to maintain a strategic distance from: aptitudes evaluations. Not at all like a normal aptitudes area, some resume formats highlight aptitudes ratings with one expertise recorded per line close to a relating space where you rate your own capacity level for each skill. These appraisals areas are ordinarily on a size of one to five, one being low and five being high. Stars and circles are the most well-known shapes utilized for the scale. Now and then individuals decide to utilize hard aptitudes, rating themselves on, for instance, the different programming dialects they know. Others decide to utilize delicate abilities or progressively broad aptitudes. In the resume layout model beneath, the up-and-comer has evaluated herself 5/5 in generosity, however 3/5 in responsibility. How numerous meetings do you figure anybody would get with this resume? Abilities appraisals, for example, this one are likelier to hurt than help. By means of Creative Market These abilities appraisals are futile, best case scenario, and unsafe even from a pessimistic standpoint. A recruiting administrator wont be dazzled by any 5/5 appraisals you give yourself. Youre utilizing your resume to attempt to establish a decent connection, so your 5/5 could be a misrepresentation. On the off chance that you give yourself ideal evaluations in all cases, an employing supervisor may think you arent being straightforward or realistic. And in the event that you give yourself an unremarkable or low appraising, that will likewise send up warnings on the off chance that you arent great at something, why show it on your resume? The recruiting administrator may scrutinize your judgment. Likewise, theres no chance to get for any other individual to know precisely what youre putting together your rating with respect to. It is safe to say that you are contrasting yourself with your present colleagues? To what amount your capacity has improved longer than a year, or longer than 10 years? Is it true that you are putting together your rating with respect to an ongoing venture you finished utilizing a specific ability? Or then again on what number of various sorts of assignments you can finish utilizing a specific expertise? These aptitudes appraisals are on the whole emotional, with no data gave past the rating itself. They dont increase the value of your resume, so stay with the customary aptitudes area. While picking a resume format, abstain from picking one that utilizes aptitudes appraisals.

Aspire to Greatness - Women Mean Business
Aspire to Greatness - Women Mean Business Aspire to Greatness - Women Mean Business 15 Oct 2014 In the last few months, more and more have been speaking and supporting the ongoing initiative of the UK Government to achieve 25% of company directors to be women by 2015. Lord Davies, who undertook the review and is now heading the initiative, is keen to ensure that there is a combination of both males and females on the board of the biggest companies in the UK by the end of 2014. The latest reports show that 61 FTSE 100 companies have yet to meet Lord Daviesâ target. My previous article, Gender Balance â" Women Mean Business, was on the topic of the frequently discussed glass ceiling that many women need to break through to be able to proceed to the top of the career ladder. It is becoming more and more widely understood that employing an equal amount of women will bring strength and a greater skill base to business. It is imperative that women also try to establish where they can improve to become better board members, and in fact, become board members in the first place. The above was the hot topic of the most recent âWomen Mean Businessâ event organised by Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce. Their main speaker, Chris Dunridge, presented her own successful career and highlighted the benefits of having values that are both personal and corporate in terms of furthering a career as a woman. Chris started her career when she joined BHS on a graduate scheme. Chris stated that she believes that retail is the best business to learn, as it gives you all round experience in a pressurised environment. Luckily, she followed top performers of the business and very quickly became a manager of their biggest store on Oxford Street. Seeking a new challenge, Chris decided to join Ocean Group at one of their cargo businesses based in Heathrow Airport. Using all the skills she gained in BHS she quickly stepped up to another role where she concentrated on improving customer service, employee engagement, morale and motivation. Her efforts were quickly noticed and saw Chris moving within the group to various roles. After having a break for family commitments, Chris set up her own company, The People Practice. In four years she grew the company from one employee to ten until she received the offer to work at TAQA. Now, after five years working with TAQA where she saw a growth of the company to 500 staff and 2500 contractors, she has decided once again to operate her own business, The People Practice. During her time in TAQA, Chris utilised her skills in a variety of ways. She assessed the engagement of employees in order to increase production by 50%, and also how to ensure that they live by the TAQA culture, âHow to behave when nobody is looking.â Chris learned a lot during her time in TAQA, particularly in terms of cultural differences in the Middle East in terms of gender and business. The mainstay of Chrisâ speech was that when it comes to ensuring a productive and respectful atmosphere for all genders, companies should set values and stick to them. Communication between all sexes needs to be clear in order to deliver the business priorities and share the same values. Employees need to live and breathe the same corporate and personal values to be an integral part of the business - values like loyalty, pragmatism, fairness and positive energy. Rhea Hussey from Fifth Ring shared a very similar view on values and positive energy. Throughout her successful career Rhea had some horror stories, some simply due to being a woman. She explained her belief in the importance of removing yourself from a difficult situation at work, and returning to your core values in order to solve the situation. For her, these are simple yet powerful; daring to be different, considering her actions, aspiring to greatness and attempting to inspire others. Both Chris and Rhea spoke of women's perceptions and mind set in terms of the influences on how far someone can go in their career. Women not only need to be robust and resilient, not taking no for an answer, but they along with all employees need to be supportive of each other, positive and keen to develop the next generation of leaders. This can only occur when everyone is self-aware and willing to create and lead change. Do you have any thoughts on how women can lead change in their companies? Let us know in the comments below.

Reasons job seekers dont get a job (that no employer will admit to)
Reasons work searchers dont find a new line of work (that no business will admit to) Let's be honest lawful or not, segregation is as yet fit as a fiddle in the activity advertise. While most types of separation are illicit, when there are many qualified candidates for an occupation, certain things may take you out as a competitor even before you get an opportunity to substantiate yourself. Here are a portion of the kinds of separation work searchers face, and how you can battle them. Family To put it gruffly, wedded candidates with youngsters are something of an obligation. They take additional time off work, hope to gain more, need more protection, and frequently place their need on family, instead of vocation. While theres nothing amiss with that, if a business is compelled to pick between a wedded, and unmarried candidate, its a simple decision undoubtedly. Ensure that you keep all family data as hidden as conceivable in a meeting. Managers cant lawfully ask your conjugal status, so dont volunteer anything you dont need to. Power them to pick dependent on merit, instead of on comfort. Sexual orientation There is a great deal of sex separation going on in the working environment, yet not in the manner in which many would expect. Now and again a business will bring their own previously established inclinations into a meeting. For instance, a few businesses incline toward female workers in light of the fact that theyre saw as increasingly charming, reliable, and factually, ladies are more averse to request raises. A few businesses lean toward male representatives, since they figure they will be increasingly forceful, and all the more ready to assume responsibility for ventures. On the off chance that conceivable, appear at the meeting early, and attempt to meet a couple of individuals in the workplace in the event that anybody is available. Figure out the sexual orientation blend and the character sort of the representatives that as of now work there, and put forth a valiant effort to extend that character in the meeting. Age Young or old, there are a great deal of hang-ups businesses have as to age. Each business needs somebody whos there to work long haul, since preparing another representative is a costly speculation. On the off chance that youre youthful, you might not have a lot of understanding, however what the questioner will truly be searching for is you potential at any rate. They may not be enthusiastic about hearing that you expect to come back to school, or that you are anticipating getting hitched soon these are everything that could make you leave. Never volunteer more data about your own life than totally vital. Additionally, in the event that you are arriving at government managed savings age, clarify that this *is* your retirement, and that you have no designs to quit working at any point in the near future. Training Often, an advanced education implies literally nothing regarding how set you up are for work, however it shows that you are instructed, also ready to endure four years of taught study. Those without a degree should work twice as difficult to appear to be more instructed than their degreed peers, and that implies going the additional mile. On the off chance that you dont have a degree, ensure your resume incorporates a lot of significant instructive experience, as administrative preparing, classes youve taken, and explicit work instructional classes. It might likewise assist with working with an open talking mentor for a couple of meetings, so as to assist you with articulating yourself well, and perhaps subdue a solid tongue, on the off chance that you have one. Dress is likewise significant. Having an off-the-rack suit customized for you is a modest and great approach to look professional. On the off chance that you look well-to-do and effective, it will help expel the sham e that those without a higher education are bound to be stuck in hands on occupations. Notwithstanding the activity youre searching for, do your exploration. Figure out the organization, and attempt to take a gander at the same number of current workers as you can. Attempt to locate any ongoing ideas among them, and utilize that to further your potential benefit. In the case of nothing else, the more you seem as though you as of now have a place in the workplace, the simpler it will be for the business to envision you as a major aspect of the group.

For love or money How to choose what to study. - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
For affection or cash How to pick what to consider. - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Heres a genuinely discouraging post I found on College Confidential a gathering about school matters: My folks conversed with me today. They were ambiguous. They didnt help. They just befuddled me more. They said effective individuals don't do what they like. Like all the outside attendants who don't generally like nursing, however they are fruitful and make the most of their prosperity. Note their meaning of effective is cash for themselves and families. Is this valid? I told my father that tycoons do what they like and he said its a falsehood. Im furious, pitiful, and befuddled, of course. They won't endorse of my concentrating abroad or joining promoting club. *sigh* How would you pick what to consider? Do you go for what intrigues you or for something that promises you a vocation? Or on the other hand do you simply let another person decide for you? Things being what they are, the most ideal approach to pick is to pick an investigation that lights your fire. An ongoing report asked 1000 school graduates in Denmark how they had picked their investigations and shown up at two fascinating discoveries. 1: Study what you like and youll find a new line of work youll like Notably, the individuals who picked considers they were keen on were significantly more prone to be content with the employments they at that point got. This isn't unexpected at all examination something that intrigues you and youre bound to wind up working with something you like. 2: Study what you like and youll get more cash-flow! Be that as it may, strikingly, individuals who picked their examinations dependent on premium were likewise bound to be content with their pay rates than the individuals who had picked their investigations dependent on how much cash they could make. Also, when you consider it, this isn't unexpected in any way. On the off chance that you study something that fulfills you will: Be increasingly gainful on the grounds that individuals who like what they do complete more Be progressively propelled and vigorous on the grounds that cheerful individuals have more vitality Learn quicker on the grounds that glad individuals do only that Study better with others in light of the fact that upbeat individuals convey and collaboration all the more effectively You will most likely even make some better memories socially while you study on the grounds that glad individuals are more enjoyable to be around than hopeless mongrels :o) The entirety of this implies you will show signs of improvement reviews and have a superior possibility of really getting your degree. Which again hoists your odds of getting a vocation in your specific field AND of being effective in that activity. Bodes well, no? Ive additionally gotta express that to me, picking your investigations dependent on potential later income appears to be empty. Would you really like to go through your work time on earth simply pursuing cash as opposed to doing what satisfies you? Picking dependent on cash is likewise extremely distant from a definite wager. Heaps of individuals have picked a field that is hot and sought after in the business world when they start their investigations just to find that things have changed once they graduate 4 or after 5 years. The world frequently changes too rapidly for such a methodology to work. Btw: The underlying post on College Confidential is somewhat dismal in the manner the banners guardians stress the old work is hard, its expected to be, no one at any point got anyplace by being glad demeanor. In any case, look at the answers: Parity what you like to do with what you have to get from it, yet you dont need to discover a profession that rouses an energy inside you so as to do it well. I generally state follow your energy, as opposed to the cash You have just a single life to live. For what reason would it be a good idea for you to give it to work that you dont like? A savvy man once said do what you love and you will never need to work a day in your life. There are a lot of individuals who found what they love, who get by out of it, and who in this way love what they do. I can't help but concur and it just demonstrates that an ever increasing number of individuals are picking bliss at work! What's more, in the event that you pick the examinations that will fulfill you, not exclusively will you be more joyful at work, you will likewise get more cash-flow. Related: Do you truly require a professional education to be upbeat grinding away? Step by step instructions to get a new line of work youll love Satisfaction is the most! A Practical Guide to Being Better Than Your Boss
A Practical Guide to Being Better Than Your Boss Over and over, we've heard effective individuals make a fascinating case: recruiting representatives who are more intelligent than you is an extraordinary business practice. Here's Phil Libin, prime supporter and CEO of Evernote: Recruiting individuals more astute than yourself is the drawn out solution to your micromanagement issue. I pay attention to it very, and I energize the entirety of my direct reports to apply it to their immediate reports, right down the association to the most junior levels. This is difficult to do, and were unquestionably not flawless at executing the standard all the time, yet we come really close. And Ryan Blair, creator of Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain: It is my objective to be in wonder of each individual I employ. I need to see characteristics in her or him that are more unique or more constructive than my own capacities here, in light of the fact that I realize that basically by working with that individual, I will have the option to develop and the organization will thrive, because of this persistent reach for development. Be that as it may, while specialists are lauding the temperances of recruiting individuals who are superior to their supervisors, workers are regularly protesting about exactly the same thing. How frequently have we heard companions, family members, colleagues, or ourselves whine about bumbling pioneers and chiefs. Representatives, all around, still credit to a generally various leveled way to deal with the working environment: we need our managers to be more astute than us; in the event that they aren't, their administration is ill-conceived, and we feel they ought to be expelled from their positions. Representatives â" it's time we correct our reasoning. On the off chance that we're more astute than our supervisors, at that point, by most records, our managers are really accomplishing something right. With that, I offer three hints for workers who find that they are more brilliant than their supervisors, with the expectations that they'll quit grumbling and begin seeing the advantages of their circumstances. Goodness, and if our CEO, Miles, is understanding this â" these absolutely are not separated from individual experience. You're by one way or another both the best CEO ever and the most intelligent person in the room. Kindly don't fire me. 1. Understand that They Made the Right Decision As indicated by Blair, the semi-amazing Bill Gates makes a propensity for employing individuals who are more astute than he is. Libin jokes that, because of his employing rehearses, he's the most moronic individual at Evernote â" and perhaps that is actually why his organization was Inc's. Company of the Year in 2011. The fact is: in the event that your supervisor employed you, and you are more intelligent than they are, at that point your manager settled on the correct choice. You might be more astute, however your manager unmistakably realizes how to oversee. Take your manager's readiness to employ a more intelligent subordinate as an indication of your supervisor's solid administration rehearses. Also, if your manager didn't recruit a more astute worker deliberately? On the off chance that your manager despite everything oversees you inadequately and attempts to declare predominance? Perceive that you might be in a situation to change that. 2. Display What You've Got Your supervisor recruited a more astute representative since they saw your latent capacity. They saw the ability you could bring to the table. Try not to go concealing your light under a bushel, at that point. It very well may be enticing to make light of your abilities. You would prefer not to appear as though you're testing the supervisor's power. In any case, making light of your abilities is actually what the manager doesn't need you to do. More brilliant representatives are useful for the organization â" flaunt your aptitudes and watch your manager develop. 3. Gain from Each Other Obviously, while you're occupied with flaunting your abilities, don't release everything to your head. You might be more intelligent than your supervisor concerning the activity that you do, however a manager who knows to enlist more astute representatives is a manager who realizes how to deal with a work environment. You're extraordinary at what you do â" and, odds are, your supervisor is incredible at what they do. So gain from your chief: see the manner in which they oversee individuals who are more brilliant than them; observe how they lead a gathering of individuals who exceed expectations in the very fields that the supervisor comes up short. Utilize these exercises to advise your own propensities as a representative. You might be a manager one day, and you can draw from your own supervisors' prescribed procedures. What's more, regardless of whether you never are accountable for a group, you'll despite everything be working with others for your entire life, both all through the workplace. You won't generally be the most astute individual in the room. What's more, obviously, an incredible manager knows to gain from their representatives also. As Libin says, I communicate with around 30 Evernote individuals every day, and I can say decisively that they all carry out their responsibilities better than I could plan to. Each time we have a conversation about work, I master something. Obviously, when everything is said and done, a few managers who recruit more astute employees are incompetent. In the event that your manager truly is awful well, that is an a lot more troubled story for one more day.

I Want To Empower You
I Want To Empower You A few years ago I had an epiphany. While doing some exercises on mission and vision for JibberJobber, and for yourself, I narrowed down my own mission and purpose to that of empowering YOU. I created JibberJobber ten years ago because as a job seeker, I felt grossly unempowered. I wrote my book, Im on LinkedIn Now What???, because I felt unempowered and confused with LinkedIn. I worked hard to get 30 day passes to Pluralsight for my users, and reward you for learning, because knowledge can be empowering. Everything Ive done in the last 10 years have been because of things Ive seen where we, as job seekers (and I believe we are all job seekers, even if we are happily employed), can have more personal empowerment. Where we just need a bit more knowledge, or a bit more tools. Soon, I will announce another movement to empower you. This announcement will give you a bit more knowledge, and a bit more tools, but more, it will give you significant opportunity. We will give you the opportunity to earn money. We will give you the opportunity to fill a gap on your resume. We will give you the opportunity to develop your soft skills. We will give you the opportunity to network differently. This opportunity is not a handout. Instead, it is an opportunity that meets you where you are, and relies on you to work. But I know you arent afraid of that. Weve been working on this for years, and have been designing and developing this for months. Stay tuned for a full announcement, hopefully this week! The 5 Qualities of a Toxic Worker
The 5 Qualities of a Toxic Worker Looking at your workforce, does everyone have a positive energy and get along well with each other? Or is there one particular individual who just makes life unnecessarily difficult and creates a negative atmosphere when they are around? If the latter is the case, it sounds like you may have a toxic employee on your hands. If the reason behind the behaviour is that the individual is unhappy in their job, then you may be able to resolve the issues; however if you fail to deal with the toxic worker, it could have negative consequences for the business. Whether they spread office gossip, or are constantly complaining about work, these behaviours can bring the team morale down. Here are a few of the most common qualities of a toxic employee, that you may want to keep an eye out for: 1) Theyre over-confident: A toxic worker tends to over-rate their own abilities and skills and believe they are better at their job than those around them. Their arrogance and know-it-all attitude can make it difficult to work with them in a team and can cause conflict to arise, due to a lack of cooperation. 2) Theyre self-centred: A toxic worker cares more about their own well-being and success than anyone elses and are likely to put them selves first whenever possible. They are unlikely to help others when they need assistance and will only go beyond their role if it is going to benefit them directly. Though this is sometimes an ego thing, sometimes the individual is just entirely oblivious to the impact they have on others. 3) Theyre always complaining: Toxic workers are often negative in the workplace because they are unhappy in their job. For this reason its common for them to complain about work to just about anyone who will listen, whether the issues are to do with their workload, their manager, customers/clients, or something else work related. Theyll often try to get others on board and plant the seed in their minds that there are problems in the workplace and bring the mood down in general. 4) They use unethical methods to get ahead: Toxic workers can play malicious games in order to get ahead. They will often go behind another employees back, or sabotage anothers success in order for personal gain or acknowledgement from management. Some examples of this could be by taking credit for somebody elses work, or flagging up other peoples mistakes, in order to make themselves look better. 5) They are dead-set on following the rules: Abiding by the workplace rules and regulations may sound like a positive quality for an employee to possess, however research has found that the more adamant an individual is that rules should be stuck to at all times, the more likely they are to be fired for breaking the rules. Ironic! [Image Credit: Shutterstock]

Free Microsoft Training and Certification for Military Veterans and Families
Free Microsoft Training and Certification for Military Veterans and Families Today is Veterans Day. Here are President Woodrow Wilsonâs words in the resolution to honor veterans on November 11. Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed; and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples. Today, our veterans are leaving the service to enter an economy that is flat; finding a good job is much harder for most of the men and women returning from war or transferring their families to another duty station. As of June 2011, one million veterans were unemployed and the jobless rate for post-9/11 veterans was 13.3 percent. On November 10, 2011, Microsoft announced the Elevate America Veterans Initiative in partnership with the Department of Labor, which will provide additional support to veterans in their transition to the civilian workforce. Here in Northeast Florida, one of just four regions in the country to receive the grant, Microsoft will offer 2,000 technology training and certification packages to local U.S. military veterans and spouses over a two year period. The technology training and certification will be available at intermediate and advanced levels and delivered through e-learning. This partnership is an extension of the overall Microsoft Elevate America Veterans Initiative which makes a national investment of $12 million in cash, product and related support for U.S. veterans. WorkSource will be receiving 700 vouchers for Intermediate IT skills (IT skills for all jobs based on MS Office 2010 and Windows) and 300 Advanced IT skills vouchers. Trainees can also receive a voucher for free certification testing. The region will receive another 1,000 vouchers in November, 2012. The vouchers are good for up to 12 months from receipt. Honorably discharged military veterans and their spouses can come into any WorkSource Career Center or Mobile Access Point to learn more about the training vouchers. Weâll assess their current IT skills and give them information about the training, certifications and the technology and computing requirements for downloading the training at home. If you know a veteran or military spouse who could benefit from this IT training, ask them to visit a WorkSource Career Center and ask for a veteran rep. You can read more about the Microsoft Elevate America Veterans Initiative and other training here. WorkSource thanks all veterans for their service to our country, and is proud to count many veterans and military spouses among our staff members. Our offices are closed today, November 11 to honor the many veterans who have served.

Writing Resume Skills - How to Improve Your Writing Skills
Writing Resume Skills - How to Improve Your Writing SkillsIs your resume writing skills on point? If you're not very good at this job, or if you are unable to write a resume that makes an employer sit up and take notice, you may want to hire a resume writing service. You can get an applicant tracking system that is loaded with thousands of unique resumes, and it can be as simple as adding the appropriate keywords to the end of your resume.Unfortunately, most people are not great at writing resumes, and getting it to look like a professional document that will move an employer is a challenge that requires lots of work. Don't get discouraged; this is a skill that you can train yourself to master. Use these tips to help improve your resume writing skills.Your writing skills will greatly improve if you can stay organized. Many resumes get started with their titles, but it's a good idea to start in the middle of your resume. Your name should start out and end up, at the top of your docume nt. Your objective statement should follow you, as well as your contact information, education information, experience information, and other pertinent details about you.The more time you spend reorganizing your resume, the more proficient you will become. Start by keeping it alphabetized, and then begin to add more organization to it as you go. Do a search online for 'organizing a resume' and find examples that will help you through the process. The format of your name is the first thing that needs to be changed. This can be accomplished by using proper spacing when typing your name. You want your name to be as short as possible but use correct spacing so that you don't accidentally misspell your name. Learn how to get it right!Your education is important, and you should take the time to explain that. A good way to do this is to include a list of your training in the body of your resume. It doesn't have to be written down. Be sure to include all of the training you've received, and include any certificates that you may have. In fact, it's recommended that you include your certification with your last name.Experience is critical for many reasons. First, it is often the determining factor for jobs that need experience. For example, a nurse may not require a lot of experience in order to be hired as a nursing assistant. However, if the position was a CNA or a personal trainer, they would require more experience before they could get the job. Keep in mind that the longer you've been employed, the more experience you'll require.Write the best resume you can, but don't make it too flashy. There are many different methods that you can use to customize your resume. Using professional resume templates, and writing your own can improve your resume writing skills, but these things take practice.

Top 6 Resume Clichés You Must Avoid
Top 6 Resume Clichés You Must Avoid Photo Credit -.workingcarers.org.auRecruiters and HR officers have to go through a lot of resumes in their bid to select the best candidate for a position. To be able to stand out from the crowd, your resume must be unique and captivating both in its content and presentation. In trying to be unique though, many job-seekers often fall into the temptation of using a number of terms that have become repetitive and meaningless in the minds of HR staff.evalAfter having seen the same thing a thousand times, they are more likely to simply roll their eyes than be captivated. Here are a few of the more common clichés that you definitely need to strip from your resume if you donât want to join the horde of so-so applicants they mentally dispose of by the time they get to the third sentence.6 Resume Clichés to Avoid1. âResults-orientedâevalSaying that you are results-oriented does not mean anything. Everyone is expected to be oriented to getting the best results they can in the course of t heir job and stating it does not make you special in any way.Instead, you should be more specific about the results you got in different roles, such as:Implemented quality control measures that reduced returns by X%Implemented marketing strategies that increased sales by X%Saved $X in expenses by implementing X accounting measuresThe more specific you can be; the better. Just be careful to make sure that everything you say will be confirmed when they reach out to previous employers to ask about your work with them. The only thing thatâs worse than a cliché statement in your resume is one the prospective employer discovers to be false.2. âCreativeâAgain, this means nothing unless you are applying to be a painter, and even then, it would resonate more with the recruiter if you were more specific. Instead of just throwing the word in there, explain the ideas you came up with that created benefits for the workplace.evalFor instance, if you thought-up new strategies or found new wa ys to implement old ones, leading to increases in productivity or reductions in cost, you should give a succinct outline of what you did.3. âPeople personâThis is so open to interpretation that it simply does not strike any chords in the minds of recruiters anymore. Your prospective employer would prefer to know exactly what you mean. So, state how you are able to facilitate communication in a team. This could be by showing how you have been able to resolve conflicts diplomatically, prefer using face-to-face interaction, or how you can motivate fellow team members.4. âReferences available on requestâWhile this is so commonplace that it has begun to seem normal, it is still best to avoid it. Some recruiters will simply get turned off immediately they see that and throw your resume to the side.evalThe term became popular because people wanted to be able to warn their referees to expect contact and be prepared to answer questions in relation to the application. While this is not a bad thing in itself, itâs likely to work better in a mid-career application than an entry-level one.The large number of such applications that recruiters have to deal with means they would appreciate not having to jump through more hoops than they have to in evaluating any single candidate. In addition, it gives the impression that the resume is a template application, rather than a unique one that was tailored for that specific position.Since you have gotten the permission of certain people to put their names down as your referees, then thereâs no reason not to include them in your resume initially.Ideally, you should give them the details of any job you are applying for and a copy of the resume. That way, they will be better able to respond to any questions about your application.5. âPassionateâevalIf you have truly been passionate about a particular thing, then the recruiter should be able to see it clearly, without you needing to proclaim it. I mean; do you know anyone who would say they are not passionate about a job they are applying to?Instead of just saying you are passionate, use your experience to show how committed you are to a particular field. You could write a statement about how your continued participation in the industry in various roles If you donât have experiences to connect like that, you could use your cover letter to show your passion, by letting them see how well you researched the company and its industry before applying.6. âExcellent oral and written communication skillsâRecruiters can tell how well you communicate after only a short time looking at your resume and cover letter. Itâs irrelevant whether you state it in there or not, because itâs not going to affect their evaluation of your communication ability. In fact, because it places you on a higher standard of expectation in their minds, it could even damage your chances. Errors that might have been overlooked might not be anymore, because they show that youâr e either lying or working with a false evaluation of your competence. And if youâre mistaken in that area, whoâs to say where else you might be mistaken? The Danger of RedundancySeeing as there is a limited amount of information that you can fit into your resume, it makes sense to keep everything as succinct as possible.evalThe preceding list of what to avoid in a resume mostly covers meaningless phrases that do not do anything to convince the recruiter to hire you. When writing your resume, it is important that every single sentence in it adds up to your central message of why you are the ideal candidate for the position. The process of editing a resume to remove clichés takes a very analytical and experienced mind, so you might want to consider hiring the services of experts who have experience writing resumes for your field. With their help, you will definitely be able to present a resume that will you stand out in the mind of the recruiter.
